When Muscat summers press past forty degrees, Jabal Akhdar sits twenty degrees cooler, two thousand metres up in the Hajar. It is the easiest dramatic escape in the country — if you plan around three realities.
First, the checkpoint: the mountain road requires a 4×4, no exceptions. Second, the nights: even in summer, evenings are genuinely cool, and in winter they are cold — pack accordingly. Third, the bookings: the boutique properties on the rim are small, and weekends sell out well ahead.
The rose season in April is the mountain at its most famous — terraces of Damask roses distilled into rosewater the traditional way. The walks between the old villages of Al Ayn, Al Aqr and Ash Shirayjah are gentle enough for most ages and better than any viewpoint.
A weekend is enough; two nights is better than one. Leave Muscat after breakfast, arrive for lunch, and let the first afternoon be nothing but the view.

Getting up the mountain
The checkpoint at Birkat Al Mouz requires a 4×4 — saloon cars are turned back, no exceptions. Allow two hours from Muscat and arrive in daylight; the switchbacks deserve it.
Where to stay up top
The rim properties are the reason people come — canyon views from bed. They are also small, which is why weekends vanish. Midweek stays cost less and feel like a private mountain.
The walks worth doing
The village walk from Al Aqr through the rose terraces is gentle and unforgettable in April. Wadi Bani Habib's abandoned village is a short scramble with the best photographs on the mountain. Neither needs a guide; both need water.
What to pack that nobody expects
A real jacket, even in June. Sunscreen, because altitude burns politely. And swimwear in winter months for hotel pools that are heated precisely because the air is not.
